Cumaru is a versatile hardwood species and is often used in heavy, durable constructions. Think of sheet piling, noise barriers and bridge and jetty decks. But also truck floors and street furniture. Heartwood and sapwood are clearly distinguishable from each other. The sapwood is light yellow. The heartwood is yellowish-brown to reddish-brown, usually with yellowish-red veins. Cumaru feels somewhat oily and has a faint vanilla scent when fresh and tastes like rancid oil.
| Name | Cumaru |
| Growth area | Tropical South America |
| Botanical name | Dipertyx odorata |
| Durability class | Class 1 |
| Strength class | D60 |
| Artificially dried | … |
| Voluminous mass | (850-)1050(-1200) kg/m3 at 12% moisture content. |
| Suitable for | Street furniture, bridge and jetty decks, pontoons, (freight) vehicle floors and other heavy structures. |
| To edit | Cumaru is somewhat difficult to work due to its high density. However, it planes well and, except for strong cross-grain, the planed surface becomes very smooth. |
